The Smoke è stato un gruppo pop inglese
di York, attivo dal 1965 al 1976.
La band era
composta da Mick Rowley (voce), Mal Luker (chitarra solista), John
"Zeke" Lund (basso) e Geoff Gill (batteria e compositore).
Originariamente
si esibirono nello Yorkshire come "The Moonshots", cambiando il loro
nome in "The Shots" quando si trasferirono a Londra.
All’epoca c'erano
due band che suonavano R & B e altre cover, una si chiamava Tony Adams and
the Viceroys, che includeva John 'Zeke' Lund al basso, Mal Luker alla chitarra
e Geoff Gill alla batteria.
L'altra band
era The Moonshots, che comprendeva Mick Rowley alla voce e Phil Peacock alla
chitarra. La band si riunì poi come The Shots e fece un singolo per la Columbia
- "Keep A Hold Of What You've Got" che fu un flop. Ad
un certo punto Peacock lasciò la band, che poi cambiò il loro nome in The
Smoke.
Il più grande
successo dei The Smoke è stato "My Friend Jack"
(classifica tedesca: n. 2, classifica dei singoli del Regno Unito: n. 45); la
BBC vietò l'airplay della canzone per i suoi presunti riferimenti alla droga.
Vennero
scritturati in Germania per l'album “It's Smoke Time”, nel 1966; lì il singolo
arrivò primo in classifica.
Cooperarono con
i Traffic per “Utterly Simple”, che venne completamente
differente da quella contenuta nell'album “Mr. Fantasy”.
Successivamente "Zeke" Lund andò a lavorare come ingegnere del suono per i Boney M., Mick Rowley fece alcuni singoli in Germania, Geoff suonò nella band Fickle Pickle. Mal Luker ha lavorato come ingegnere del suono in film come “Pirati dei Caraibi” e “Shrek terzo”.
